Monthly motif reading challenge 2017

Anche quest'anno partecipo alla Monthly motif reding challenge, ospitata dal blog Girlxoxo.

La sfida va dal 1° gennaio al 31 dicembre 2017 e consiste nel leggere ogni mese un libro con un certo tema.

JANUARY – Diversify Your Reading Kick the reading year off right and shake things up. Read a book with a character (or written by an author) of a race, religion, or sexual orientation other than your own.

FEBRUARY – Undercover Thriller Read a book involving spies, detectives, private investigators, or a character in disguise.

MARCH – Time Traveler Read a book set in a different dimension, a book in which time travel is involved or a dystopian or science fiction book where reality looks very different than what we’re used to.

APRIL – Award Winners Read a book that has won a literary award or a book written by an author who has been recognized in the bookish community.

MAY – Book to Movie or Audio Read a book that has a movie based off of it. For an extra challenge, see the movie or listen to the audio book as well.

JUNE – Destination Unknown Read a book in which the character(s) take a trip, travel somewhere, go on a quest, or find themselves on a journey toward something.

JULY – Believe the Unbelievable This month it’s all about fantasy. Epic fantasy, urban fantasy, fairytales, magic, etc.

AUGUST – Seasons, Elements, & Weather Read a book in which the season, the elements, or the weather plays a role in the story.

SEPTEMBER – Creepy, Chilling, & Frightful Cozy mystery ghost stories, paranormal hauntings, murder mysteries, weird and scary creatures- it’s up to you!

OCTOBER– Games, Challenges, & Contests Read a book that involves a game of some sort. Video games, war games, psychological mess-with-your-mind games, characters who participate in a contest, or a story in which the character takes on a challenge.

NOVEMBER – Last Chance Read a book you’ve been meaning to get to all year but haven’t yet or read the last book in a series you started.

DECEMBER – Picking Favorites Read a book by one of your favorite authors or read a book that Girlxoxo has recommended this year.

Full house reading challenge 2017

Anche quest'anno partecipo a questa sfida ospitata dal blog Book Date . 

La sfida va dal 1° gennaio al 31 dicembre 2017 e consiste nel leggere un libro per ciascuna delle categorie elencate nella tabella. In totale 25 libri, perchè ogni libro può riempire una sola casella. 

E' permesso cambiare una casella che non piace assolutamente con qualcosa che si preferisce, ma solo una volta. Nel post a sfida terminata bisogna fare riferimento a questo cambio.

* Book about books. This can be fiction or non-fiction. It can be anything for example where the setting is a book shop for example. 

* Not really for you. This can be a kind of book you don't usually read, or it could be one you just DNF, or one you just didn't enjoy that much. 

* Diversity. Think ethnic, cultural, religious, and gender diversity and you may come up with something you think of as well, as the list is basic. But it must be somehow quite different to you.

The Classic Book-a-Month Club 2017

Il blog Roof Beam Reader ha lanciato questa sfida interessante, che consiste nel leggere un libro classico (da lui indicato) ogni mese. Vorrei partecipare perchè ci sono libri che ho sempre voluto leggere, mentre alcuni dei titoli non so se riesco a trovarli in italiano... Comunque si può anche partecipare solo ad alcuni mesi.

SFIDA SOSPESA. In data 24 febbraio ho provato a collegarmi al sito di questa sfida. Ora è diventato un blog chiuso, ad invito. A queste condizioni, temo che la mia partecipazione alla sfida non proseguirà. Peccato. 

Back to the Classics Challenge 2017

Sul blog Books and Chocolate ho trovato questa interessante sfida che vuole incoraggiare i blogger a riscoprire i classici. Alla fine c'è anche un vincitore che riceverà un premio su Amazon.com o The Book Depository.

Ci sono diversi livelli di partecipazione alla sfida: leggere sei, nove o dodici categorie di libri. 

Per essere considerati classici, i libri devono essere stati scritti almeno 50 anni fa, cioè fino al 1967. L'unica eccezione sono i libri scritti prima del 1967 ma pubblicati postumi.

Children's classics are acceptable, but please, no more than 3 total for the challenge.

Queste sono le categorie:

1. A 19th Century Classic - any book published between 1800 and 1899. 

2. A 20th Century Classic - any book published between 1900 and 1967. 

3. A classic by a woman author. 

4. A classic in translation. Any book originally written published in a language other than your native language. Feel free to read the book in your language or the original language.  

5. A classic published before 1800. Plays and epic poems are acceptable in this category also. 

6. An romance classic. I'm pretty flexible here about the definition of romance. It can have a happy ending or a sad ending, as long as there is a strong romantic element to the plot. 

7. A Gothic or horror classic. For a good definition of what makes a book Gothic, and an excellent list of possible reads, please see this list on Goodreads. 

8. A classic with a number in the title. Examples include A Tale of Two Cities, Three Men in a Boat, The Nine Tailors, Henry V, Fahrenheit 451, etc. 

9. A classic about an animal or which includes the name of an animal in the title. It an actual animal or a metaphor, or just the name. Examples include To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, The Metamorphosis, White Fang, etc. 

10. A classic set in a place you'd like to visit. It can be real or imaginary: The Wizard of Oz, Down and Out in Paris and London, Death on the Nile, etc. 

11. An award-winning classic. It could be the Newbery award, the Prix Goncourt, the Pulitzer Prize, the James Tait Award, etc. Any award, just mention in your blog post what award your choice received. 

12. A Russian Classic. 2017 will be the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, so read a classic by any Russian author.

Cruisin' thru the Cozies Reading Challenge 2017

Terza sfida carina che ho trovato sul sito di Socrate's Book reviews, che riguarda la lettura di libri "cozies" (sul questo sito c'è una spiegazione di cosa si intende per cozy mistery book).

La sfida va dal 1° al 31 dicembre 2017. I libri possono essere in ogni formato (cartaceo, ebook, ecc.).

Level one (Snoop) - Read one book in each of these cozy sub-genres (total of 10 books)

- One from culinary (anything dealing with food: restaurants, baked goods, etc.) 

- One from animal related (cats, dogs, birds, etc.) 

- One from craft related (any kind of hobbies - knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, etc.) 

- One from paranormal (witches, vampires, etc.) 

- One from British cozy mysteries (example: Belinda Lawrence series) 

- One career-based cozy mystery (housekeeping, wedding planner, etc.)

Kafka sulla spiaggia - Haruki Murakami

Titolo originale: Umibe no Kafuka - 2002

Un vecchio che capisce la lingua dei gatti e un quindicenne con la maturità di un adulto. Il primo fugge da un delitto sconvolgente, il secondo da una sconvolgente profezia. Inquietante, avvincente e visionario, Kafka sulla spiaggia è il romanzo che consacra Murakami come uno dei più grandi narratori contemporanei. (www.einaudi.it)

Il romanzo racconta due storie parallele, a capitoli alterni. 

In una troviamo Tamura Kafka, un quindicenne, abbandonato a 4 anni dalla madre, che vive con il padre scultore col quale non ha alcun dialogo ma che gli ha fatto una terribile profezia molto simile a quella ricevuta da Edipo ("ucciderai tuo padre e giacerai con tua madre e tua sorella"). Kafka (che è un nome che si è scelto lui), ha una specie di alter ego, il ragazzo chiamato Corvo, che lo sprona a diventare il quindicenne più tosto del mondo. Nella sua fuga, già progettata da anni, Kafka arriva alla biblioteca Komura, dove conosce il bibliotecario Oshima (personaggio che si autodefinisce "diverso" in quanto si comporta da uomo ma in realtà è una donna) e la direttrice, la signora Saeki, con un passato misterioso e che da giovane aveva composto una canzone di enorme successo chiamata "Kafka sulla spiaggia".

Nella seconda storia troviamo Tanaka, un sessantenne con deficit mentali causati da un misterioso incidente accaduto in età scolastica, che non sa nè leggere nè scrivere ma parla con i gatti e vive del sussidio del governatore. Tanaka si imbatte in Johnny Walker, un raccapricciante personaggio che si diverte a catturare gatti per torturarli e fare collezione delle loro teste, ma che chiede proprio a Tanaka di ucciderlo. Tanaka, in un impeto di rabbia, esaudisce il suo desiderio, e si trova quindi a scappare verso ovest, chiedendo passaggi ai camionisti, l'ultimo dei quali, Hoshino, decide di prendere una pausa dal lavoro e aiutarlo in questa particolare "missione" che Tanaka sa di avere. Anche lui arriverà alla biblioteca Komura e alla signora Saeki.

Le due storie poi si intrecciano in diversi punti.

La prima cosa che mi viene in mente chiudendo questo libro è il sangue, che è un po' il filo conduttore dell'intera storia (dalle mestruazioni, ai legami di sangue, al sangue sparso in guerra, al sangue dei gatti, al bibliotecario emofiliaco, ecc.).

La scrittura di Murakami mi piace, ha uno stile fluido, scorrevole, anche se la storia narrata sembra veramente scritta sotto l'effetto di qualche sostanza stupefacente perchè, al di là di essere molto visionaria, ci sono dei punti in cui è proprio fuori di testa. Nel complesso però ho chiuso il libro contenta di averlo letto, nonostante abbia trovato assurdamente atroci le scene in cui Johnny Walker uccide i gatti (io l'avrei accoltellato appena aperto il frigo...) e decisamente di cattivo gusto l'incesto con la presunta madre e lo stupro della pseudo sorella (perchè lei non era proprio consenziente, pur essendo tutto accaduto in un sogno). Ad un certo punto ho sperato che si scoprisse che in realtà Tamura Kafka non era il figlio della signora Saeki, bensì una specie di reincarnazione del fidanzato morto (ma in realtà lei non conferma mai che è la madre, lascia in sospeso dicendo a Tamura che lui ha la risposta).

Un'altra storia che non viene chiusa è proprio la storia di apertura, dei bambini che cadono svenuti nella radura. Anche dopo che la maestra spiega la verità, mi è rimasto il dubbio di cosa c'entri col resto della storia, a parte ovviamente il fatto che in quell'episodio Tanaka perde i sensi e si risveglia con deficit mentali. Ma alla fine non ho capito cosa sia successo davvero nella radura.

Ci sono alcune riflessioni interessanti sulla guerra, in particolare sull'inutilità delle guerre e sui soldati che se non fossero costretti non ucciderebbero altri uomini. Altri passaggi interessanti sono sul senso di vuoto dei personaggi, sull'importanza dei ricordi.

I personaggi secondari sono dei comprimari decisamente interessanti, con personalità ben sviluppate, in particolare Oshima, la Saeki e Hoshino. Ma è interessante anche la prostituta che studia filosofia.

A parte quindi le pagine su Johnny Walker, che ha tutto il mio disprezzo, il resto del romanzo è interessante. Strano ma interessante.

Sempre sul blog Socrate's book review, ho trovato questa sfida che non potevo farmi scappare!

What an animal reading challenge

Quinto anno per me in questa sfida, ospitata da Socrate's book reviews . 

Le regole sono semplici (ma quest'anno sono state un po' cambiate): 

1 - leggere almeno 6 libri (cartacei o ebook) in cui un animale gioca un ruolo importante o libri in cui un personaggio principale si trasforma in un animale o è un animale (gli altri anni bastava che ci fosse un animale in copertina o nel titolo; quest'anno non vale più)

2 - l'animale può essere di ogni tipo (reale o inventato): cane, gatto, scimmia, lupo, serpente, insetto, porcospino, draghi, sirene, vampiri eccetera. 

3 - la sfida dura dal 1° gennaio al 31 dicembre 2017. 

Ci sono 4 diversi livelli di sfida: 

livello 1: leggere fino a 6 libri; 

livello 2: leggere da 7 a 12 libri; 

livello 3: leggere da 13 a 20; 

livello 4: leggere 21 o più libri
