2022 Monthly Key Word Reading Challenge

This is a monthly challenge that runs all year long from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022.

Eight “key words” are given for each month. Your task is to read 1 book that includes one or more of the key words in the title.

Synonyms and suffixes are allowed. For example, if the keyword is ‘Lake’ you may also use the words ‘Lakes’, ‘Water’, ‘Sea’, ‘Ocean’. Consult Thesaurus.com for appropriate synonyms.

2022 Monthly Motif Reading Challenge

A Motif, or theme, is given for each month. Your task is to read 1 book that fits the motif for that month.

MARCH- Buzzed About Books. Read a book you saw buzzed about a lot in 2021 but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.

APRIL- Books to Screen. Read a book that has a movie or TV adaptation made based on it. For an extra challenge, watch the show after reading the book.

MAY- Book Lovers Unite. Read a book set in a library or bookstore; with a librarian, author, or book loving character; OR a book with the word ‘BOOK’ in the title.

JUNE- Supporting PRIDE through books. Read a book by an author who is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or a book featuring LGBTQIA+ character(s).

JULY- Summer Lovin’ – Having a Blast. This month it’s all about the beach reads, rom coms, and/or love stories. Pick something fun and light-hearted.

AUGUST- Quick Lit. Novellas, Graphic Novels, Poetry Collections, books under 200 pages, one sitting reads.

SEPTEMBER- Title Play. Read a book with a clever title that uses a play on words, a pun, a joke, or titles that have double meanings.

OCTOBER- Murder or Magic. Read a murder mystery book or a magical realism book.

NOVEMBER- Books in Translation. Read any book that wasn’t originally written in your native language but has since been translated to it.

DECEMBER- The Fire is So Delightful. Read a book that has a fire, flames, candles, smoke, or burning in the title or on the cover.

Southern Literature Reading Challenge 2022



Riprovo questa sfida. Si tratta di leggere libri e autori della part sud-est degli Stati Uniti.

Sfida ospitata da "Introverted Reader": We’ll focus on books and authors from the southeastern region of the United States.

Definition of “The South”:
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia.

Read books by Southern authors set largely in the South.
You can read any genre, including fiction or nonfiction, classics or modern works
You can read books meant for any age group
The challenge will run from January 1 through December 31, 2022

What’s in a Name 2022

La sfida va dal 1° gennaio al 31 dicembre 2021. Si tratta di leggere sei libri, uno per ogni categoria:

1. Compound word -- A compound word is one that is composed of two or more words that express a single idea and that function as a single word. They words can be together, separated by a space, or separated by a dash (cheeseburger, waterproof, red-hot, school bus). For this challenge it just makes sense to allow titles that are made from two words together even if they aren’t “real” words, like Inkspell, Nevernight, etc). For example: Fangirl - Watership Down - Penpal - The Breakdown

2. Speed -- That’s any description of speed (fast, slow, quick, swift, etc).

3. Person and their description -- It’s a person (queen, man, sister, husband, artist, etc) and a word that directly describes them in the same title. Singular or plural. For example: The Silent Patient - The Good People - My Dark Vanessa - Pretty Girls - The Lost Man

4. Mythical being -- For example: The Lady and the Unicorn - Floating Dragon - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - The Mermaid Chair - Interview with the Vampire

5. Season -- That would be one of the four seasons (spring, summer, autumn/fall, winter), the word “season,” or perhaps a season I don’t know about in another part of the world or a holiday season. For example: A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Winter Garden - The Fifth Season

6. Color -- Any color at all, including if it’s also a plant or food (red, green, burgundy, fuschia, lavender, etc.) For example: Red Sparrow - The Priory of the Orange Tree - The Mystery at Lilac Inn

What An Animal Reading Challenge 2022


Sfida ospitata da Socrate's Book reviews.
 
The challenge will begin on January 1, 2022 and end on December 31, 2022.

Any book read for this challenge has to have an animal that plays a major role in the book (which could be fiction or non-fiction.) It also counts if a main character is (or turns into) an animal (define that however you'd like). In the past, books would qualify if an animal is in the title or on the cover, but that alone no longer qualifies. This challenge is for books related to animals and just because they are in the title or on the cover, doesn't mean it's about an animal.

These are the levels.
Level 1 - Read 6 books
Level 2 - Read 7-12
Level 3 - Read 13-20
Level 4 - Read 21 or more

The animal can be any type of animal (real or fictitious)--dog, cat, monkey, wolf, snake, insect, hedgehog, aardvark...dragon, mermaid, centaur, vampire, werewolf...you get the idea...

Books can be fiction or nonfiction.

2022 European reading challenge



TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY TOUR!

The idea is to read books set in European countries or books by European authors. The books can be of any genre – fiction, nonfiction, novels, short stories, memoirs, travel guides, cookbooks, biography, poetry, whatever. You can participate at different levels, but each book must represent a different country -- either written by an author from a different country or set in a different country, no two books from the same country. It's supposed to be a tour! 

WHAT COUNTS AS "EUROPE"?: For this challenge, we use the standard list of 50 sovereign states that fall (at least partially) within the geographic territory of the continent of Europe and/or enjoy membership in international European organizations such as the Council of Europe.
These 50 European sovereign states are:

Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Macedonia, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, and Vatican City.

NOTE: Even with Brexit, the United Kingdom is still one country, part of Europe, that includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. One book from any one of these four counts as your one book for the United Kingdom. 

LEVELS OF PARTICIPATION
Participants can read as many books as they want and are encouraged to visit as many European countries as possible. The Jet Setter Prize will go to the person who reads (and reviews) books from the greatest number of different countries (see below).

- FIVE STAR (DELUXE ENTOURAGE): Read at least five books by different European authors or books set in different European countries.
- FOUR STAR (HONEYMOONER): Read four qualifying books.
- THREE STAR (BUSINESS TRAVELER): Read three qualifying books.
- TWO STAR (ADVENTURER): Read two qualifying books.
- ONE STAR (PENSIONE WEEKENDER): Read just one qualifying book.

NEW: Read all books between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022. The December 31 reading deadline is new.

Sfide 2021

Quest'anno arrivo lunga a scrivere il post di riepilogo, nonostante, dopo il libro di Stephanie Barron, abbia avuto tre giorni di riposo per guardare un po' le nuove sfide. Ma sono giorni in cui non mi sono fermata un attimo per altri motivi e, quindi, per la prima volta comincio l'anno senza avere nè una idea precisa delle sfide nè uno straccio di ipotesi sui libri che leggerò. In realtà, tra il gruppo di lettura online e i due dal vivo, sta diventando abbastanza complicato riuscire ad incastrare tutto....

Nel corso del 2021 ho letto 93 libri. Non credo di essere mai arrivata ad un traguardo simile. Devo dire che, mai come lo scorso anno, il fatto che in tv non ci fosse praticamente mai niente di interessante, ha fatto in modo che spesso alla sera mi mettessi a leggere.

Dal 9 al 24 dicembre, poi, ho avuto la possibilità di fare una delle più belle esperienze della mia vita: lavorare in una libreria! Non potete immaginare la gioia! E' stata un insieme di circostanze fortunate, perchè la ragazza che di solito veniva chiamata in questo periodo aveva trovato un lavoro per sei mesi e quindi non era disponibile, unito al fatto che nel mio ufficio invece erano tempi anche troppo tranquilli quindi potevo fare degli orari bizzarri. Oltre al fatto che ero al posto giusto nel momento in cui la libreria ha avanzato la proposta e mi sono subito offerta. Non voglio dilungarmi su questo, aggiungo solo che ero stata assunta per fare i pacchetti regalo, ma in realtà ho anche risposto al telefono, fatto alcuni ordini di libri, usato il registratore di cassa e il pos, oltre ad aver imparato alcuni meccanismi che stanno dietro al lavoro in libreria. Fantastico. Sono stati 15 giorni di fatica (anche fisica) e di incastro delle duemile cose da fare, ma è stato davvero fantastico. Chissà che non mi capiti di poterlo rifare!!

Ma torniamo alle sfide del 2021. Purtroppo, 3 sfide non sono riuscita a completarle, e non tanto perchè avevo esagerato, ma perchè ad un certo punto mi sono quasi completamente dedicata alla european challenge...

* european reading challenge --> non so cosa mi sia preso, ma quest'anno ho letto tutti i 50 libri, uno per ogni stato europeo, l'ultimo dei quali finito il 23 dicembre. Alcuni Paesi sono stati difficilissimi da trovare, tipo la Georgia, l'Azerbaijan, il Montenegro, la Macedonia, il Liechtenstein, il Kazakistan. Molte volte i libri magari c'erano ma non erano tradotti in italiano. Tra quelli che ho apprezzato di più mi sento di segnalare l'Irlanda, la Bosnia, l'Armenia, La Slovacchia e la Lettonia. Ma molti altri sono stati letture interessanti.

* leggere tanti Stati nuovi, mi ha portato a concludere la mia Around the world in 80 books --> Nel 2021 ho letto 23 libri (Netherlands, Vatican City, Romania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia, Montenegro, Monaco, Czech republic, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Estonia, Pakistan, Belgium, Norway, Macedonia, Slovenia, Liechtenstein, Armenia, Andorra, Moldova, Slovakia, San Marino, Belarus, Latvia) che mi hanno fatto raggiungere un totale di 82 Stati visitati (con San Marino ho completato la sfida degli 80 stati!). Questo significa che, se mi fossi impegnata, avrei potuto concludere la mia sfida ben prima dei cinque anni che mi ero data all'inizio, anzichè lasciarla scadere. Ma pazienza.

* what an animal --> con 13 libri letti ho raggiunto il terzo livello.

* cruisin thru the cozies --> incredibilmente, non sono riuscita a concluderla, sono arrivata a 9 libri su 10.

* monthly motif 2021 --> sfida completata il 7 dicembre.

* monthly keyword 2021 --> sfida completata il 28 dicembre.

* calendar of crime 2021 --> sfida completata ad ottobre.

* color coded 2021 --> non sono riuscita a finirla. Non ho trovato nulla di interessante per la categoria "implies color". Un po' mi dispiace

* popsugar reading challenge 2021 --> Ho voluto riprovare questa sfida anche se, sinceramente, le categorie mi sembravano molto sbilanciate. Ce ne sono diverse relative a minoranze etniche, due relative più o meno a saghe familiari. Insomma, altri anni le categorie erano più vaste. Ma pazienza. Ero partita pensando di saltare a piedi pare la parte advanced, perchè non ho una vera e propria lista di libri da leggere, e non mi andava di ricostruirla apposta, poi però facendo mente locale, di libri che erano rimasti lì inattesa di essere letti ce n'erano. Alla fine non sono riuscita a completarla, più per mancanza di tempo che per mancanza di idee. Della sfida base mi manca il libro scritto da una personalità online; avevo scelto il libro di Nala (il gatto che gira il mondo in bicicletta col suo adottante), l'avevo anche cominciato, poi mi sono detta che l'avrei letto troppo di corsa e invece me lo volevo gustare, visto che li seguo davvero online. Per la parte avanzata, è difficile che abbia dei libri non finiti perchè cerco di arrivare in fondo anche quando mi fanno schifo e quei pochi che non ho finito è perchè non ho nessuna intenzione di finirli. Avevo optato per Le notti bianche di Dostoievski, che avevo cominciato a leggere durante un turno in ambulanza e poi non l'avevo finito. Ma pazienza, lo riprenderò in futuro magari.

* back to the classic challenge --> ho completato i traguardi delle 6 e delle 9 categorie di libri. Tutto sommato sono soddisfatta.

* what's in a name --> bisogna iscriversi a wordpress per commentare però l'iscrizione la prende. Sfida completata il 13 novembre. 

* while I was reading -->  il confronto avviene su facebook (o su goodreads, ma non sono iscritta), non ci si linka sul sito promotore. Sfida completata il 7 ottobre!

* Southern Literature reading challenge --> Novità di quest'anno. Non so il motivo, ma mi sono fatta tentare da questa sfida. Purtroppo ho letto un solo libro, ma avevo trovato delle idee interessanti e spero venga riproposta anche il prossimo anno.


Ho già cominciato a dare un'occhiata alle sfide per il prossimo anno. Ce ne sarebbero tante interessanti, ma devo poi considerare anche i gruppi di lettura i cui libri, non so perchè, si incastrano sempre a fatica con le challenges.
Credo, quasi sicuramente, che non ripeterò la popsugar challenge. Mi dispiace perchè è una sfida che su instagram dà visibilità (a parte il fatto che ho caricato solo alcuni dei libri letti nel 2021... sigh), ma proprio ha tante categorie che non mi interessano (c'è addirittura un horror... no no).
Le sfide che ormai faccio da anni voglio mantenerle, poi ne sto valutando alcune nuove.. ci penserò..
